Sixth grade:
The sixth grade students attend CYO Camp Rancho Framasa for a Christian Leadership retreat to kick off their St. Simon middle school experience. Students spend the day outdoors practicing the leadership and team-building skills that are essential for a successful, productive middle school experience. The 6th grade visit the Indianapolis Zoo as a way to enrich their Ecology unit in science. After reading an adapted versions of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol in literature class, sixth grade students attend a live performance of the play at the Indiana Repertory. In the spring, the sixth grade students attend a baseball game that coincides with some of the math concepts they have learned throughout the year. They will see how math can be found everywhere, including sports. The Sixth grade’s service project follows the theme “Feed the Hungry.” Students volunteer at various charities, including Gleanor Food Bank.
Seventh grade:
St. Simon seventh grade students are involved in a year-long study of international countries. Every student researches a specific country and participates in the culminating activity - St. Simon International Fair. In addition to researching different countries, students read literature from a variety of cultures, including A Long Walk to Water, and Homeless Bird. Seventh grade students participate in a poverty simulation experience and leadership retreat.
Eighth grade:
Our 8th graders make a substantive step in their faith formation by walking the journey of Confirmation beginning in the fall, The students participate in monthly classroom sessions of reflection and direct catechesis of the Catholic Faith. They attend a day long retreat and receive the sacrament of Confirmation in the spring. The pinnacle of the students’ 8th grade year is a trip to Washington DC. Students visit a bevy of historical locations in and around the D.C. area. This week-long experience is the perfect way to conclude the students’ educational journey at Saint Simon.
