St. Simon the Apostle has a rich tradition of quality Catholic education and high expectations for students to excel academically, emotionally, and spiritually. This ongoing development of the complete child empowers students to leave St. Simon with a solid, foundational knowledge of their God-given talents. St. Simon the Apostle Catholic School’s Mission Statement proclaims, “Saint Simon the Apostle School is a community dedicated to the spiritual and academic development of the whole child. We prepare our students for a life-long commitment to education, the Catholic faith, and stewardship in a Christ-centered, safe, and efficient environment.” The school mission is exemplified through the actions of students and staff on a daily basis. All St. Simon students participate in numerous volunteer opportunities, including visiting residents in nursing homes, providing food for the less fortunate, and serving the community. St. Simon the Apostle Catholic School believes it is through living one’s faith that a person truly becomes a steward of God’s gifts.
The current enrollment of St. Simon the Apostle Catholic School is approximately 650 students in preschool through eighth grade. Students in preschool through third grade are in self-contained classrooms, while fourth and fifth grade teachers share the responsibility of teaching science, social studies, and math. Students in grades 6-8 are in a middle school setting with content area teachers for English/language arts, science, social studies, religion, and math. Students also receive instruction in technology, art, music, band, STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics), Spanish, academic intervention, and physical education. Spanish and library are offered weekly to students in K-5. St. Simon the Apostle Catholic School continues to expand fine arts offerings. Students can choose to participate in a full year of band or music/art. St. Simon continually assesses the needs of the students and the programs it offers to provide a strong environment that inspires and motivates the student.
St. Simon the Apostle School implements and analyzes a multitude of assessment tools for monitoring student progress. Annual assessments from the Indiana Department of Education such as ILEARN and I-READ Assessment are used as criterion-referenced data points. Additionally, students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade participate in NWEA testing for Reading, Math and Language Usage. NWEA is a nationally, norm-referenced test administered in the computer lab. Reading levels are assessed twice a year using Developmental Reading Assessments (DRA) for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. This data drives the instructional strategies, programs, professional development, and curriculum for students and teachers.
St. Simon is recognized for its academic excellence by the Indiana Department of Education and the United States Education Department. Additionally, St. Simon was honored to be recognized as an “A” school in 2019, 2018, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2012, and 2011 by the Indiana Department of Education. St. Simon the Apostle Catholic School is a past Blue Ribbon Award winner and was named a Four Star School at the end of the 2013, 2014 and 2015 school years.
St. Simon excels at our commitment to Catholic identity and faith-based service. Students attend weekly Mass, and have an opportunity to be directly involved in the liturgy. Students see the opportunity to confirm and support their Catholic faith by participating as altar servers, readers, Eucharistic ministers, or as a part of the music ministry for weekly Mass. Students may also participate in the liturgy during the weekend Masses. Students in pre-k through eighth actively participate in a variety of service activities throughout the year. Each grade level has a specific charity or service project they support. For example, Kindergarten students travel quarterly to a local nursing home to provide entertainment and companionship. Furthermore, the fourth grade students design and make a unique Rosary, solicit prayer requests for the monthly Rosary, and facilitate a Living Rosary for the student body.
St. Simon middle school students work collaboratively in weekly advisory sessions to provide a dialogue among peers, awareness of community, appreciation of differences, and knowledge of their faith. Each Advisory group includes students from sixth through eighth grade and a staff member. The eighth grade leadership team members are trained to lead the advisory sessions. There is a focus question, project, or speaker for each advisory session to drive discussion or outcome. Middle school students participate in a service fair where they learn about different Catholic charities and how they can service those in need. The advisory groups participate in leadership training, service projects, and teambuilding.
